The Artist Statement
by Valentina Herrero
In my
current stage of life, I am struggling to understand myself and learn who I
truly am. There are many changes, both physical and emotional taking place,
while a part of my life is slowly ending; a new one is being born. With many
constant emotions and thoughts running through my mind, I have managed to slow
them down and express them through art. At the begging of this course I found
myself struggling to find a technique that I felt comfortable using. I started
using acrylics on canvas, brawling with the lights and shadows and trying to
imitate Zinaida Serebriakova’s different expressions and use of bright
colors. As I gradually accepted that
painting is not my strength, a passion for drawing emerged and I found myself
absorbed by Burne Hogarth and his dynamic figure drawing. The strange delicate
detail he portrays on his human figures and hands caught my attention. Still
facing my weakness with lights and shadows used in painting, I also managed to
focus on drawing all types of figures and ideas that popped into my mind. With
this realization, I found fewer difficulties expressing myself, since a pencil
in my hand helped me feel comfortable with the lines I was creating on paper,
making the connection with my thoughts and my artwork.
