The artist Statement
by Marianne Bickner
With a stressful school schedule
and a thirst for creativity, I chose IB art in tenth grade not really knowing
what I would get into. This was the class I doubted the most since I am very
numerical and not the best at art but I decided that it was a challenge I
needed to undertake. Throughout this course I have tried several techniques
from oil painting, watercolors, acrylics, and photography but ended up finding
my passion in textiles. This course made me realize that through different line
qualities I am able to express different things. Strings and threads give me
freedom in art that yet connects everything back to the design fundamentals:
lines. My first artworks are not loose at all, not only because of the media I
used, but also because I was very stuck on the idea of being perfectionist.
Yet, as I progressed as an artist I discovered that lines and threads were my
thing and that I got very interesting pieces out of these techniques. I have
discovered different ways to using threads like sewing the canvas, gluing
thread to it, and letting threads loose. When analyzing my artworks, I was able
to draw connections between different meanings of animals, techniques, and what
I wanted to portray as an artist: connections. I did very different projects
that ended up having the same idea of meaning even if I did not plan it so.
After long periods of searching for something I like, I now know that I have
found my style in the use of threads. An artist that inspired me is Josh Bryan
with his accurate portraits of celebrities made up of triangles.
