MARIANA CASTRO Lincoln School Costa Rica. IB Visual Arts 2015

The artist Statment
by Mariana Castro

I was first hesitant about taking the IB Art course but I decided to take a risk and decided to enter the class. I wanted to explore what I could do with art because I had never had a space where I could explore and work in depth.

My art has evolved a lot since I first started the course. I started sketching more and experimenting with several media and techniques until I began to loosen up. In my works I focus mostly on the search for identity and my purpose is to illustrate the connection humans have with nature.

I achieved a lot with values and lines in my final artworks. I discovered that I preferred to do mixed media because I could combine different materials and techniques. This was the way I could express myself the best. My art was influenced by French knife-painter Francoise Nielly. She works with very bright colors and has a very free brushstroke.

I have discovered that I struggle thinking outside of the box. It was very difficult and took a lot of time for me to finally not fear the consequences of my art and just be freer. Throughout the course I have experimented with a lot of techniques. I worked with transfers, photography, oils, acrylics, printmaking, watercolors and many others.
