NICOLE MALICK IB Visual Arts 2016 Lincoln School Costa Rica

The Artist Statement
by Nicole Malick

The vision of presenting this body of work is to challenge people’s ability to accept other crazy realities. I’ve always been attracted to other religions, beliefs and ideologies I’ve become what I am now: (I really don’t know where I am) I believe in nothing and I believe in everything. For this my family has accepted and respected me for my beliefs… never forced me to anything (but “Confirma”). But they brought me here and I thank them for that. I started painting, drawing and at the same time getting very interested in psychedelic art. Something that’s been brought up now more than ever since the 70s. Its colors and crazy out of this earth ideas immediately got my attention. This is why my exhibition will be reflecting whole distorted realities.
And why the doodles did I picked a normal oil self-portrait to put as my cover? At the beginning of Art IB I said to myself that I will never be able to succeed with other medias and was really ashamed because I thought I could only draw. I now have found other talents with different techniques that I never expected. This self-portrait was the biggest challenge in my whole time in this class. I can’t ever remember the amount of time I spent on the painting. Media research and testing were only the first steps to completing by portrait and actually liking it. I’m also inspired by Terence Mckenna’s writing do to his interesting opposite ideologies and by opening up peoples perspectives. I plan to attract people’s attention with the use of colors and forms. I chose that space because it was simple, only one wall and all white So people wouldn’t get distracted by the background and there could be a great contrast between the art works and the wall.
I want to make people see that there’s many filters to reality: social, ethical, gender, age, sexuality…many ways to see thing.

Studio Work

Ayee  by Nicole Malick
Acrylics, ink and collage. 129x72cm

I did this painting to demonstrate the essence of myself. The most challenging part of the painting was the recreation of a tie dye with painting. It was done with a brush but mostly with fingers since it was the most interesting, fun and easy way to do it. The praying hands in the middle represent two of big parts of my personality. The first one: my love for art. Durer first drew this hands in 1508 and is one of his most recognized works. Durer is also one of my favorite artists; a tribute for my love for art. The second one: Drake used the same hands as the logo of his album 6God. He represents my love for hip-hop/rap/rnb music. Finally the tie-dye and the cut-out are a reflection for my love for hippie and psychedelic art.

D’accord  by Nicole Malick
Acrylics oncanvas.  29x72cm

This work was totally unplanned, something that demonstrated 3 stages of serenity. The upper stage will be showing a sky with the top of a palm tree. The second stage will be land, it will have a lighthouse on a cliff and the body of the palm tree, with a person on a tight rope. Finally, the third stage includes a totally different scenario; showing a jellyfish fighting the algae for a girl, and a scuba diver trapped in a cell. The stages evolve into a less serene scenario, creating a question to the audience about if going deeper is always a wise decision. The red and blue values contrast each other creating harmony between the works. The drops of alcohol resemble bubbles which separates the paint into a circle.

Hu$tle  by Nicole Malick
Lino cut prints.  70x62cm

This work was one that took longer to do. It comes from a series of animal drawings that are flying on balloons. The image is repeated 6 times in different colors. The colors, style and position of the bears make this work pop-art. The bear is standing in an attacking position with a crown on his head as if he was a king. Represents the essence of someone who was earned his place and its respected for his decisions. The balloons and are helping him het to the top and he’s protecting them with a loud roar.

Lic Noveo by Nicole Malick
Collage and acrylics. 45 x 60.5 cms

“Two entities, lost in a new world, where everyone and everything belongs to an established system.” Once we chose Lic. Memareo’s name, mainly because of his spiral, we thought about Noveo’s name. Memareo means “I get dizzy”, in this case our Graduate can’t see a thing; blind in society, lost in media he was named Noveo, which means “I can’t see”.
The horrors of being a broken compass is the headline of the collage, it resembles the things Lic. Noveo wonders and desire. Making him feel different, adding a heavy burden of thoughts that cause blindness in his mind.

Lic Memareo by Nicole Malick
Collage and acrylics. 45 x 60.5 cms

The main idea behind this painting was how the “world’s system” brainwashes us to fit into a specific role in society, following what they want us to be; instead of following what we actually desire. The colors in this painting are cold and faint, trying to empathize the feelings of monotony into the audience. There is no face because the man is confused and he doesn’t really know who he is. “Open up to the possibility that everything you know is wrong.” I chose the name when I was painting with a friend, Rafa Molina, and we were thinking about possible names for the artwork; since Lic. Memareo looks alike from Lic. Noveo we decided to name them something that will connect them together, but at the same time differentiate them from what they individually represent. The name “Lic.” comes from the Spanish word “Licenciado” which means Graduate, was an inside joke because instead of using a regular “Mr.” we wanted to use something that resembles our country and this new upcoming culture.

I’m not screwed  by Nicole Malick
Assemblage

This Conceptual Me was done after asking multiple classmates to describe me in one word. The predominant answer was that I lost a screw, period. So basically the artwork consists of a typical Lost and Found box which you can find in any school or office, but in this box you can find what people think I’m missing, a lost screw. But if you look close enough, there’s a note attached to that screw, that says “If found, please don’t return”. I realized that if what I am is a person with a missing screw, then I really don’t want it back. On the outside of the Lost and Found box you can find psychedelic patterns, which reflects my love for the psychedelic state.

Lost Lust by Nicloe Malick
Mixed media on canvas. 45x61 cm

This painting was inspired in the saying: “You love me because I'm naked? Or Am I naked because you love me?”. It shows how sometimes lust can be confused for love and vice versa. It is composed of a naked woman being touched by a man… that image repeated 3 times. This way the audience can not only feel the sensuality of the piece but also get the sense that the image isn’t concrete. The point of view is the man and it seems as if he's looking at the woman in a dizzy sense as If he was drunk. The colors cyan, magenta and yellow were chosen because of the old 3d lenses that had one lens red and the other one blue. The face of the woman is looking to the back so all the attention is focused on the hands of the man touching the body. The image is repeated 3 times in different colors showing a psychedelic distorted image.

Solis Hidalgo by Nicole Malick
 acrylics on canvas. 50.5x41 cm

Don Quijote de la Mancha is one of the most important pieces of literature in the whole history. This painting was made for a friend’s 19 birthday. The person who he admires the most was his grandfather which loved Quijote and got him interested in Quijote’s adventures. This painting is also for the people who really do know the book of the stories since there's no explicit image of characters, just their shadows. The background successfully contrasts with the shadows since its full of colors and wavy forms representing a sun down. The painting shows a lot of movement and balance which it will appeal greatly to the audience’s eye.

Soy by Nicole Malick
 Oils on canvas. 35.5x 45.5cm

This self portrait was a real challenge because it was a test for oils. With unexpected successful results this portrait resembles pride. It demonstrates a state of empowerment. Everyone should be proud of who they are, and somehow this painting captured that essence. The colors in this work try to give a warm sensation to the audience, and still deliver a powerful value. The work is incomplete since I first wanted to make my senior shirt on me. Because I didn’t know what color it would be I improvised skin but never finished it. I'm really content though with the results “unfinished” because it makes the audience focus more on the details on my face.
