The Artist Statement
Camelot Corrales
My body of work explores and focuses on emotions and ideas surrounding the theme of childhood. When I became a teenager and was faced with the challenge of becoming an adult I struggled to accept the changes that were expected of me. I tried from a very young age to be as much of an adult as possible and became almost an opposite of my child self; someone monotonous and silent. In my works I explore ideas that surround childhood in an attempt to remember the simple joys of infancy.
Concepts like joy, wonder and anger are expressed through the use of symbolism in my series “Babies”. Kids are a symbol of uncontrolled emotion. The theme explored the differences between the way in which adults and kids express themselves. In order for the audience to maintain the focus on the emotion rather than in the individual pieces that formed this series they were all arranged next to each other so that the reader understood that they were all meant to communicate one big theme instead of separate emotions. The backgrounds used were plain and light to allude to colors that are connected with childhood. Tints of blue, green, and red hues were considered to be the more appropriate and helped to choose the best backgrounds that were available to me. In the end I decided to utilize white and a blue star patterned background to enhance the theme of innocence and childhood.
My piece “Stress and Pressure” was exhibited in the ground so that people had to look down to see the expression of pain and sadness in the subject. The whole point of this piece was to communicate the extreme pressure that the world puts on younger generation each passing year. This piece also is meant to symbolize the way in which my own childhood ended shortly after expectations from others changed my personality. The way in which this is presented makes the audience feel sad for the subject and successfully achieves the communicative intention.
My biggest piece titled “wonder” was exhibited in the eastern wall of the space provided so that it could be there as the only piece in the wall for both size restrictions and for it to be a center of attention. The place chosen served as a way to lure the audience to see the exhibition as a hole.
Imagination by Camelot Corrales
Acrylics on Canvas. 120cm x 130 cm
The artwork is meant as a personal
interpretation of a kids imagination. As a kid i was fascinated with castles
and fantasy. This project is meant to portray the stairs of a castle. It was
the product of an extensive investigation on perspective.
Baby 1 by Camelot Corrales
Acrylics on Paper. 73cm x 50cm
Baby 1 was created as a way to cherish
one of the most important moments of childhood in western culture a baby´s
first step. The subject doesn't have a face because it is not needed to
understand what the piece is trying to say and would serve as a distraction
from the body as humans tend to look into the eyes of someone else first.
Baby 2 by Camelot Corrales
Mixed Media. Acrylics on Wood. Pencils. 50cm x 45cm
Baby 2 communicates the uncontrolled
emotion that babies feel and the fearless in which they express this emotions.
Adults have to control their feelings and even hide them but babies do not
care. Baby 2 expresses his joy through the use of movement and body language
something that adults do rarely. It is meant to be a reminder to the viewer
that emotions do not need to be hidden.
Baby 3 by Camelot Corrales
Acrylics on Canvas, Pilots. 50cm x 50cm
Baby
3 just like Baby 2 was made to enhance the idea of babies as a symbol of
emotion in my exhibition. Anger is a strong emotion that everyone tries to
avoid. Baby 3 has different textures to enhance the intensity of the emotion
that is trying to communicate. It is the first and last artwork in the baby
series with a face. Red hues are used because the color is a symbol of anger.
Ready To Go by Camelot Corrales
Acrylic on Canvas. 40.6cm x 50.8cm
The
idea for this Independent Project was that a kid only needs a toy in her
backpack in order to be ready for any situation. The project was a still life
of a picture taken by myself.
Stress and Pressure by Camelot Corrales
Mixed Media. Paper Mache. Acrylics. 100 x 60 x 90cm
The
project is meant to communicate the pressure that younger generations are
under. The constant rise in population makes it harder for kids everywhere to
succeed as the education systems get more and more competitive. This project
was also meant to communicate the environmental problems that younger
generations will face.
