The Artist Statement
by Sophie Perez
Art in itself has always been present
in my life. From finger painting on construction paper in pre-school, drawing
in my notebooks, and now taking IB art as a high school student; art always has
become not only a form of expression but also a “safe place.” I have never
really excelled in math or have been good with words but somehow I always felt at
home when art was involved.
I have always paid attention to
details in pretty much everything and am fascinated by textures as well as
colors. The way paint looks when it’s in a jar, glob, or brush stroke makes me
feel like I can taste each color at my fingertips. It intrigues and inspires me
how some art pieces make you want to reach out and feel the different surfaces
and mediums.
Throughout this IB course I have
aimed to explore different media in order to understand who I am as an artist.
I experimented with oil paints, acrylics, watercolors, sculpting with clay,
collaging, drawing, textiles, printmaking and several mixed media. Due to my
love of exploring these and trying different outlets, I have never had a
serious problem with completing studio work. My real struggle lies in
expressing myself in words when it comes to research and connections in my
independent workbook. I strive to overcome that in order to go further with my
studio work.
My love for 3D work was intensified
by artists such as Sylvie Fleury who influenced my pieces “Yours truly” and
“Life set.” Fashion has also had its influence on my art pieces such as “Skull
Skirt” and “Queenie.”
This course has helped me grow more
than I thought possible. I have gone from flat drawings of unproportioned
objects and people, to creating 3D models of the human skull inspired by Mexican
traditions as well as media that goes beyond a pencil and paper.
