The Artist Statement
by Natalia Barrantes
At the
beginning while choosing my IB courses my first option was art, I thought I
should choose a subject where I could be spontaneous and free. My other courses
were chemistry, biology, math and several others that are very structured courses
with almost no room for creativity. As I started the course I began to
experiment with different techniques in order to see which were my strengths
and weaknesses. I started with still life drawing, acrylics, oils, print making
etc. There, I discovered that painting wasn’t my strength. I felt comfortable
in the areas of building, cutting and assembling. So I began my research and
learned about Installations, which were my first artworks. Later I began to
retake drawing and tried to improve in human anatomy drawing, which needed the
most improvement. As I started to improve I started to combine with other media
like painting, and ended up with a very interesting result. Paul Richer and
Robert Beverly which exposed all their wisdom in the book called Artistic
anatomy published in 1889, and influenced my drawings, provoking me to improve
and have my artwork evolve. Movements such as the Neoclassic with a notorious
artist like Antonio Canoval and his sculptures also influenced me to see a
different perspective where the human anatomy can be manipulated according to
the meaning you want to transmit. With my love for creating and building,
combined with my love of science, I believe I have evolved and finally found my
direction as an artist.
