The Artist Statement
by Sergio Madrigal

It is said that the purpose of Art is to "disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed." In a society plagued by countless cultural, socioeconomic and existential problems, my artworks incline towards an optimistic view through which I strive to counteract the negativity brought on by these problems.
On the other hand, there is a more personal aspect in my art. It reflects my profound interest in natural sciences and the seemingly insurmountable questions about the Universe that they attempt to answer. References to living organisms and organic structures, as well as shapes and brushstrokes reminiscent of astrological bodies such as nebulas or stars appear throughout my projects. Time as a fourth dimension, as discussed in physics by great minds such as Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein, is an idea that has had great influence in my art. I ponder upon this intriguing concept in works such as The World Keeps Turning, a photography project, and Simultaneity, a series of prints, both techniques which capture a moment in time.
This junction between science and art was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Kelsey Brookes. After a career in biochemistry, he shifted to art, incorporating scientific knowledge into his work. Moreover, he is influenced by the psychedelic movement of the 1960's. Present in most of my artworks, some characteristics of psychedelic art are the use of fluorescent colors with high contrast, loose brushstrokes and paint movement.

Through these characteristics I seek to express positivity for myself, and for anyone who comes across my work. I find, being aware of how massive the culmination of all that surrounds us genuinely is -- in both a micro and a macroscopic point of view -- can help make the problems of humanity seem insignificant, allowing for a state of transcendence where one can cease to worry and just appreciate the beauty of our existence.
