The Artist Statement
by Sofia Garcia
Being
an introvert person it’s hard to explain how I am feeling and show who I really
am. Since I was little art has showed me how to express myself and how art can
reflect my inner thoughts and concerns. IB Visual Arts was an opportunity I
knew I had to take, although I knew it was going to be a challenge. I tend to
focus on cultures as well as emotions in my projects, I like to express what I
am feeling and show experiences that have influenced who I am. I believe my
biggest achievements have always been in terms of design: as I learned
different techniques such as oils, acrylics paints, water colors, india ink,
printmaking, photography, etc. I had different difficulties, I believe my biggest challenge during the
course was creating the different values
as well as getting out of my comfort zone. I overcame this challenges by
trying to be free and ignoring the posible outcomes, I decided to liberate my
restrictive thoughts and I believe I obtained great results. One artist’s style
who I think is reflected in most of my artworks is Chrissy Lau. She is an
illustrator from England whose artworks are inspired in Chinese heritage. Her
work shows an exploration in line qualities and various patterns she also likes
to draw portraits and include a few colors but focus mainly in black. After
researching about different techniques and obtaining different results, I found
printmaking and exploring different line movements to be the most rewarding
techniques. At this point I believe my artworks reflect who I am, and what
techniques I am able to master. I found art to be source of freedom and expression.
