The artist statement
Mari Tere Gomez
As long
as I can recall, I’ve always had a passion for color. This infatuation towards
light and the vibrancy of colors led to my desire of becoming an artist as a
young girl. My purpose for joining IB art was to transform what used to be an amusement
in my childhood, such as painting and drawing, to a more serious activity.
My
purpose when I paint is to portray color, and light. I want to express bliss,
nature and the ironies of human condition. In order to evoke these concepts, I
used bright colors. I want to improve my skills because I want to capture
movement. Nonetheless, I find it a particularly challenging thing to do. My
inspiration when I paint is my late grandmother; she passed away when I was
just a girl. Nonetheless, her oil paintings line the walls of my house. I grew
up watching those portraits of unknown people, and still lives portraying
stunning flowers resembling artworks of the Impressionist movement. Both
Impressionism and Surrealism have always caught my attention, in the course I
have been inspired by both movements to improve my skills and elaborate my
ideas.
Through
IB art, I’ve learned that masterpieces are not spontaneous. They are
well-developed projects that through the artist’s knowledge transform into remarkable
works of art. I have always been very impulsive, and when making art this can
become an issue. This is the hardest obstacle I encounter when painting because
I don’t develop the concept thoroughly. When I have a design I want to start working
right away, without media tests or developing my plan until it is mature. By
experimenting with: charcoal, graphite, pen, ink, watercolor, oils, acrylics
and transfers I have learned to develop my ideas and have discovered alternate
methods to express my artistic purpose.
