Whenever I imagined myself twenty years from now I thought I would become a business or medical women, I never thought I had the chance or ability to become an artist. My only creative escape was my passion for photography, so when we were asked to choose our IB courses I took the risk to encourage myself to take IB art in order to pursue my creative dream instead of my convinced career.  As the year started I began to experiment with new media that I had little knowledge of like Das and oil paints. I realized that my skills were not limited for photography, but that I could enjoy creating artworks with acrylics and oil paints. At first my techniques were shy and unbalanced, like on the egg exercise, but as the course continued I began to loosen up and realized that I was able to do good things like my self-portrait.  I researched different media techniques that I had always found interesting and impossible to do, and I learned from the processes and failures, but from all of the experimentations I got interesting and superb results that encouraged me to continue developing my abilities. Every time I got to go to class I was excited to experiment with color, different media like rollers, brushes, cardboards and many other media that interested me but that I was never before in contact with. I have always wanted my art to encourage other people to take a leap of faith like I did, and if I can to represent my inner self in my art works. I got inspiration from things that moved me: my dreams, my failures, my passions, and concerns. Destiny Womack’s technique started of as my inspiration to capture the techniques and movement of water and acrylics and Oswaldo Guayasamin’s lack of fear to experiment with terror itself. I believe that I have found not only an escape from the daily routines, but also a lifestyle that conquers my emotions and perception of the world as an artist.

As long as I can recall, I’ve always had a passion for color. This infatuation towards light and the vibrancy of colors led to my desire of becoming an artist as a young girl. My purpose for joining IB art was to transform what used to be an amusement in my childhood, such as painting and drawing, to a more serious activity.
My purpose when I paint is to portray color, and light. I want to express bliss, nature and the ironies of human condition. In order to evoke these concepts, I used bright colors. I want to improve my skills because I want to capture movement. Nonetheless, I find it a particularly challenging thing to do. My inspiration when I paint is my late grandmother; she passed away when I was just a girl. Nonetheless, her oil paintings line the walls of my house. I grew up watching those portraits of unknown people, and still lives portraying stunning flowers resembling artworks of the Impressionist movement. Both Impressionism and Surrealism have always caught my attention, in the course I have been inspired by both movements to improve my skills and elaborate my ideas.
Through IB art, I’ve learned that masterpieces are not spontaneous. They are well-developed projects that through the artist’s knowledge transform into remarkable works of art. I have always been very impulsive, and when making art this can become an issue. This is the hardest obstacle I encounter when painting because I don’t develop the concept thoroughly. When I have a design I want to start working right away, without media tests or developing my plan until it is mature. By experimenting with: charcoal, graphite, pen, ink, watercolor, oils, acrylics and transfers I have learned to develop my ideas and have discovered alternate methods to express my artistic purpose.

With a life so full of pain and a world so full opportunities, I found my self in art. I choose to IB Visual Arts course because I could have a class where I would be free to play with joyful opportunities and experiment with different media and techniques.
I knew I wanted to demonstrate emotions through body language and because I had to study the human body great masters of art inspired me to do my creations. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci, El Greco, Michelangelo, and August Rodin made me see what I could do and made me want to strive to demonstrate emotion through the human body. Through this course I had the chance to notice that my strength is working on 3D: ceramics and paper machie sculptures. Because it was so much easier for me to be able to create the emotion I want the audience to experience. At the same time I discovered that my biggest weakness was to create volumes and values with graphite and paintings on paper or a two-dimensional painting.
I also discovered that I have a very big problem with values and light when I was taking pictures and using photographs.  During this course I experimented with graphite, oil paints, acrylic paint, makers, water colors, Indian ink, paper machie and ceramics and was able to adapt to different media and to master most of them. But the most rewarding achievement for me was exactly that, to be able to be free with all the medias and experiment with everything I could to be able to find myself in my craft and art.
