I choose IB Art, to discover my artistry and expand my creativity. I had never had a chance to express myself artistically before and I was rather curious. Also, I was looking for the IB Diploma that would be most challenging and versatile and I decided that Visual Arts would grant me that opportunity.

I remember that I was infatuated with the idea of scenery. I could not care less about people or sculptures. I imagined myself doing only scenery. Obviously I had never gone to an art exhibition or else I would never have considered this class, but I’m glad, because art has allowed me to grow as an artist and how I approach and perceive the world.
I first started with a combination of color pencils and granite pencil to create texture, but as I began to experiment I began to use acrylics and oil paints and to explore other opportunities. My fist challenge was changing the way I see the world. To understand that the sun is not yellow and that the mountains are not green. I really had and still have a long way to go. As I changed the way I thought, the world around me changed, suddenly everything was art.
As I began to research about various artists and media, I began to discover new art techniques.  From Caravaggio, Kimon Nicolaides and Sir Stanly Spencer and Neo Romanticism, to more current artists like Erika Stanley, Mary Ellen Croteau, Anatol Knotek and Chuck Close. I began to research and explore media like Oil Pastels, Acrylics, Oils, Impasto, Sculpture on Candles, Contour Line Drawing, photography, Bottle Cap Art, Written Portraits, Pointillism, and Collage Making. They all proved to be its own set of challenging but enjoyable and different.
In general, I have encountered complications in every single project I have done, which I love, because it teaches me how to problem solve and experiment further. In conclusion, I feel that this course has allowed me to understand myself better, because now when I’m emotionally overcome or exhausted I just work on art, and it gets better. I still have a lot to learn and I am very excited for elements like printing, ceramics, and watercolors, as well as larger scale projects.
