The Artist Statement
Melania Chaves

My experience in IB Art introduced me to a completely different world of art. Previous to this class, when I painted a subject, for example, my aim was to replicate the image as it was using colors and textures to bring it to life.  The final piece had no other meaning than what I saw.  Ms. Mora taught me something different, however. My works should have a deeper meaning besides just what I saw.  They need to speak to their audience. Not only did my creative process take on a new direction but also, as my confidence grew, I began to view my work in a more meaningful way.

Throughout the course I have created several art works. These pieces are meant to show how society stops people from expressing themselves and being who they are due to stereotypes and hard criticism. I believe people should be able to express themselves without the fear of being criticized or harassed.

The day that I first started the Art IB course I didn’t know much about composition, colors, or line quality. As I began to create more art pieces, I developed a better idea of how the composition should be. I also improved in line quality and values. My biggest problem was with the use of colors in creating lights and shadows. I started creating several media such as: acrylics, oil painting, charcoal, ink, plaster, color pencils, and ceramics. In the end I ended up doing an artwork in which I used my fingers to paint all over a cardboard with acrylics.
My artistic impulses have allowed me to explore and experiment with many diverse mediums. This has allowed me to develop my creative process and push the boundaries of my imagination.  I have also been influenced by different art movements such as surrealism, and by artists such as Sarah Simblet, Egon Schiele, and Freidensreich Hundertwasser.
