The Artist Statement
Alejandro Finol

I chose IB Art to expand my artist abilities, experience new media, and to learn how to develop a project from and idea, into a work of art. These traits would allow me to implement them in other areas such as architecture. As an individual I am a very reserved person, it is difficult for me to just do things, especially as an artist.  Through my work in this course I liberated myself from my own confinement, allowing my creative expression to be released, even if what I do is not mimetic representations of nature. I have learned that art is about expressing what you feel, and as long as that message is effectively transmitted, then the artwork could be considered successful. There is nothing that makes me feel better than when I see an image sprout before me as I carefully scrape the fine tip of my pencil across a piece of paper.
As an artist I feel most confortable with graphite on paper, and thus I also feel that my strength is my use of line. I struggle many times to see the world in range of tonal values. I need to train my eyes to detect the slightest differences, but with graphite I feel that this much easier to identify and exploit than with color. To continue forward I need to improve on these weaknesses by continuing to paint, because the only way to improve is through practice. The two artists that influenced me the most were H.R. Geiger and Cynthia Mora. Gieger’ use of line and a gray scale inspired me to pursue drawing even more. While Cynthia taught me how liberate myself artistically and express my ideas through my artworks. I have tested with many different media: oil paints, watercolor, pencil, color pencils, acrylic, photography, linocut, collagraphs. However, I would also like to work in sculptures and explore that area of art.
