The Artist Statement
Maripaz Alfaro
I chose IB Art as one of my courses because throughout my life I have had a vast infatuation for anything related to this topic. I’ve always had an artistic influence from my mother, so since I was a little girl I have considered art and creativity a part of my world. I had a lot of trouble finding a purpose for my work, since none of them actually connected with each other. However, what they all had in common is that they express who I really am as a person and as an artist. I have tried several media such as acrylics, paper, oil paints, pencil, and charcoal. The media that I have enjoyed the most are paints: oils or acrylics. However, I still have concerns on my confidence when using media such as charcoal, pencil and watercolors. My main achievements seen in my artworks are the use and combinations of colors to create tonal values and volume. I have attempted to overcome these perceived weaknesses only through practice to improve and polish my abilities. Also, these weaknesses can be improved my using mixed media, fussing my strengths with my flaws. Therefore, I have enjoyed working with different medias and techniques to create more unique pieces of art. For my Art IB projects, my main influences were the artists David Aguenjo and Yulia Brodskaya. Yulia is a famous quilling artist who inspired me to use her paper technique in several of my final artworks. Since I have always been fascinated by crafts, I felt a strong connection with this technique and therefore utilized it in my projects. On the other hand, David Aguenjo was the first painter that caught my eye during this course. He is a Spanish artist that uses colors in his artworks to portray realistic images. He made me understand something about myself, which is my adoration for colors, something that can now identify my art and my style as a real artist.
