The Artist
Statement
Ana Victoria Carrillo
My love for art is unimaginable. This is
mainly because I have a hard time expressing myself through words. And art in
the form of dance, painting and photography, has given me the opportunity to do
so. The IB Art course allowed me to improve skills
on watercolor and acrylics, as well as to discover new techniques when
experimenting with different media such as printmaking and oils. This has broadened
my knowledge on how different materials work together and explore different
surfaces, giving me opportunity to communicate my interests and passions through
distinct styles.
At the beginning of the course, I struggled
with the ideation process of my projects. Now, I understand that in order to
communicate my interests, I need to go further with the first idea that jumps
in my mind. I am passionate about nature. I find
myself intrigued by elements such as light (color), texture, and lines.
The impressionist Leonid Afremov
inspired my starting point of the course. The way he uses color and creates
rhythm with the palette knife is fascinating. As I went deeper into studying color, I
was strongly inspired by the Swiss artist and photographer Fabian Oefner. I
then noticed that color could influence and communicate a person’s emotions. In
the process of communicating my emotions through color, I found myself in a
conundrum because the colors and lines were not coherent. That was when I
learned that I could also communicate emotions with different line qualities
and textures.
Photography has given me the privilege
of seeing things from a different perspective. Through my pictures, I am able
to show nature from a unique perspective. Today, I find myself analyzing
everything from an artistic perspective. This has made have a positive
perspective on life and everything that surrounds me.
