The Artist Statement
Andrés Ochoa

I have always have loved sports and muscles. Sports and exercise for me is an escape from stress and unwanted anger. I chose IB art because I new I wanted to learn human anatomy to include sports in my projects. My main purpose in my work is to illustrate and show the power, and energy created from sports and exercise. One of my main concerns is how sports and exercise are used wrong and not practiced with the same intense as before. There no longer is that energy in them that I portray in my art. I discovered my strength working in 3D while molding with clay. I later on used paper mâché and cast plaster. I faced difficulties in drawling and painting. However I was able to overcome this by using different materials to create rich texture and surface qualities. Some of the artists who have inspired and influence me the most are Dan Reeder, who make amazing 3D monsters normally dragons and Burn Hogarth who has amazing books on the anatomy of the human body and hands. Some medias I have practiced are: graphite, pen, watercolor, collagraph, lino prints, acrylics, oil paint, transparent, photography, cast and transfers. Out of all of these the ones I have been able to master the most are; paper mâché, clay, cast, and transfers are my favorite due to me being able to touch and mold my art with my own two hands. Overall I enjoyed the IB art course as it made me open my eyes and see society from a deeper perspective, and has helped me improve my techniques in different mediums.

The Artist Statement
André Wong

I have always had this interest in how the world moves, every action is done by a reason, but what I have been trying to do is to find that reason. When I was asked to write this artist statement I had no idea what I should write about, so I looked back to the first day of this class, Art IB. At the beginning I must admit I wasn’t going to take the class, but a friend of mine, convinced me to stay in the class with him. I stayed believing and hoping it would be a class where I would do absolutely nothing and I would have fun each class. After the first semester I learned it wasn’t that way. Don’t get me wrong, all my classes were fun, I enjoyed each time I had to walk to the art building, but I learned I had to be responsible and work hard for the grade. For example, when I entered the class I thought I could do all my works with graphite pencil, because it’s my favorite medium, but I discovered a whole new world of medias in this class; like acrylics, water colors, and spray paint. After the first year I notice none of my works had something related, I jumped from one topic to the other with no reason at all, and this frustrated me a little bit. I had to find a reason behind all my work, if I didn’t it would be like a clock without the main gear and still running, it had no logic at all, but now that I have finished all my works I found the real reason behind all my works. I investigated artist like Hokusai and Da Vinci, to connect my work, but at the end I discovered the reason behind all my work. I did them because I had fun, I did them to improve myself, I did them because each thing I did meant something to me. What I’m leaving in my work is a piece of me, part of my soul, it’s what I like, it’s what I dislike, it’s how I was able to enjoy even more my life. Art made me happy.

The Artist Statement
Daniel Guth

I have been fascinated by art and design since I was a child. I have always been a creative person and know I will keep creativity very close to me for the rest of my life. IB Art was a course that helped me see this creative component of life in a whole new way, in a different perspective. This course helped me think outside the box and got me out of my comfort zone. Some of the most valuable experiences for me were the various critique sessions we had in class, in which everyone had a say and an opinion. This coming and going of ideas was very valuable and when applied, the improvements in my work were very noticeable. I learned to do things I had never done before, I used different techniques and methods I had never considered using: finger painting, using plants and bottle caps in painting, digital photography, printmaking, transfers and different mixed medias were some of the methods that I would not have considered doing before the past two years, but now I see art in a whole new light. This course develops sensitivity towards art and design that glues to a person’s life once it is seen. Although there were hard times and periods of no inspiration, the knowledge and experience gained in this course is priceless. During the course of the last two years, an artist that influenced me greatly was Richard Estes. I was particularly interested in his work because of the fact that he sets the majority of his works in the city, which is a setting I am very interested in. I took the advantage of being able to express myself in an empty canvas and criticized society sometimes in subtle ways, and other times in a bolder manner. The liberty in this course is the most important component since it made me think independently, not based on instructions, just on my own ideas, my own experiences, my own life.
