The Artist Statement
Luisa Saborio
Sometimes words aren’t enough to explain what you truly feel. When I do
art I feel like there are no boundaries just honesty. The canvas is a perfect
mirror of the deepest feelings and concerns in our heart and mind. However it’s
important for art to have certain technical value. I decided to engage in IB
art because I felt like it would help me transfer my thoughts to the canvas in
a more appealing way. There are so many things that we can learn about
ourselves through the process of research and idea development. I really like
to focus on the concept of my artworks. My initial objective was to show
different points of view. My first project was a portrait of a clown melting
down with tears running down his face. I was trying to show how sometimes we
assume things about others or judge them, however behind every person there is
a story and an explanation to what they do. The one thing that interested me
the most of my final project was that I portrayed one of the things I fear the
most in the world, clowns. Working on research and making connections has
helped me develop my ideas. Inspired by my first project I developed the rest
of my independent projects around the theme of fear. Fear is one of the most
powerful feeling humans go through. There are many types of fear and each can
have different effects on a person. The artists that influenced me the most
were street artists: Banksy, Mr.Brainwash, and Shepard Fairey; mainly because
they make strong criticisms and focus on the concept of their artwork. They are
not afraid of expressing realities and unpleasant scenes. During the course of this year I have made a
lot of media experimentation and found really interesting techniques ranging
from colored pencils to digital photo manipulation. Along the way my favorite
part was to learn more about myself and how my subconscious expresses itself
through the motion of my hands with different mediums, colors and intensity of
lights.
