VALERIA ROJAS IB Visual Arts Lincoln School Costa Rica

THE ARTIST STATEMENT
Valeria Rojas

When I started the IB program, my expectations were much different than they are now. Not only has it been a challenge for me, but it has also opened my eyes to new ideas and ways of learning that I never imagined. I chose IB Art because I thought it could help me become a more creative and independent person. During my first year, the main problem I faced was finding a way to develop an initial idea further and make artwork that would express my thoughts and be attractive to viewers at the same time. I was able to get past this when I discovered that I work well with watercolors and also acrylic and oil paints when it comes to portraying tonal values and volumes on a flat surface. I found that I enjoy painting subjects that have to do with the human face and body. During some of my independent projects, different artists, cultures and techniques influenced me. I found myself to mostly associate with the chiaroscuro technique when I worked with both acrylic and oil paints. Also, during my self-portrait, I found that I could create my own style after studying techniques used by Rembrandt and Frida Khalo. Most recently, I became influenced by a more surrealist style and began developing more creative ideas by drawing with my subconscious. My latest works feature these ideas as well as Chinese philosophical influences that I used to represent my final theme of balance. This got me out of my comfort zone by forcing me to create a sculpture. I thought this was the most difficult project to develop since sculptures are not my strength, but the necessary tools I obtained throughout the course were what motivated me to try something new. I believe that the influences and experiences I have had during the IB Art course have truly made me a different person and presented me with a new perspective of art and ways of learning in general.
