The Artist Statement
Elizabeth Lang
All organisms, dead or alive, are in constant
vibration. As human beings we can perceive these vibrations and get acquainted
with them. Our perception about the things that occur around us is linked with
the vibrations that we transmit and receive. Therefore, I have chosen the idea
of perception as the main concept for my trajectory in the IB Art course. I
chose this course for one main reason: to soothe myself. There are three basic
components in my artworks that are always linked: music, nature and the human
being. With different media such as permanent markers, acrylics, watercolors,
cardboard and wire I have developed my artworks and identified my stronger
skills in particular media. I have developed my doodling technique which is
quite interesting because the subconscious splatters itself on paper. With this
technique I unconsciously express my emotions based on my perceptions. The line
quality is always different because my emotions interfere in the process. Photography
is another medium I have used for my artworks. I find photography to be a way
in which expression is at its strongest without the use of words. The building
of three dimensional artworks or sculptures, especially about the brain forms
part of who I am as an artist. In these cases I have created volume by
adjusting the brain into a realistic view. Artist John Gourley has been a
strong influence in my artwork, not only with his artworks, but also with his
music. Doodling mixed with watercolors, which has been the foundation for my
projects is based on his own technique. My artworks express who I am and what I
love the most. I have found my own style, which I have been able to enhance by
communicating the message of constant vibration.
