The Artist Statement
Marijose Guerrero
The IB Visual Arts course have been for me a
way to express myself, release all the stress that surrounds me and most
importantly know who I am as an artist and person. I started this course two
years ago. I remember that day I entered for the first time with a vision of
myself accompanied with a great motivation to hopefully achieve great things in
this course. As I started the course I was very shy and restrained in my ideas,
painting and drawings. I started to loosen up with time, but the first art
works are probably the ones I struggled the most; since I had a lot to learn
before I these pieces could be the result of what I imagined in my mind. I had
great ambitions but closed ideas for my independent projects, but with a push
of my teacher and classmates to research and do media experimentation, I
started to see my ideas come to life naturally in ways I initially have never
thought of. I learned how to take a common idea and make it my own, giving it
my perception and intention in it. Once I had my theme established being
women’s stereotypes I did some art works with it but my ambition kept pushing
in, so I made it in a bigger scale being societies stereotypes and finally that
ended up converting in my final exhibition of 7 huge pieces of the seven deadly
sins. My art pieces ended up being things I never envisioned but through my
paintings, plates, corset and resin sculpture I managed to express my struggles
through these two years of course. Today I leave this course behind me with no
regrets, but what I learned in these two years is what I will keep forever in
me. At the end of the day the challenges faced, the struggle, the art, the
research, the hard work, the experimentation, and the help of my teacher and
classmates to accomplish my goal, is what helped me determine the person I want
to be
