ALANA FILLOY Ib Art Lincoln School Costa Rica 2015

THE ARTIST STATEMENT
Alana Filloy

Art is liberation. Simple, yet intricate. It is for this that I chose to pursue my love for art and include the IB Art Course within my course load. One of my favorite aspects about art is the freedom. The freedom to do whatever makes me feel, genuinely feel. Therefore, the purpose of my work and efforts throughout this two-year course was to focus on externalizing, and facing my inner conflicts.

During this course I have experimented with different media such as watercolors, acrylics, oils and printmaking. Early on, after several hours of practicing, I figured out that drawing was not my calling at all. I preferred and felt more comfortable with other techniques such as assemblages, mixed media and textiles. I nevertheless understood the importance of drawing skills and struggled throughout these two years to develop and better my skills.

When researching for my cultural and artistic connections I came across a very important idea. The fact that my art is somewhat centered on releasing and tending to my internal conflict and overall peace of mind, my work is very influenced by a branch of Conceptual art titled Confessional Art. Artists such as Louise Bourgeois influenced my work greatly as it allowed me to understand that expressing one’s deepest feeling is not only OK, but extremely therapeutic. My art allowed me to express myself while subconsciously healing my soul. I cannot express in sufficient words how much I owe to art and the people who have influenced and supported me throughout my journey.

THE ARTIST STATEMENT

Art is a big part of my life. That is why, of course, I chose IB Art. With artistic influences all around me, I slowly drew my way through life since I was a child. At the beginning, I drew because I enjoyed it. However, now the purpose of my work is not just to make myself feel good for what I do, but to tell people about myself. I want to show how my life has been influenced by both external and internal aspects that sprouted nostalgia within me.

There is just one aspect of my life that I regret, and probably most people regret it too: it is the enjoyment of childhood. It was one of the best times of my life, but I think that I did not enjoy it enough, and that is why all of my artworks reflect nostalgia. Life is just too short.

I have always thought that art has no errors, and in a sense it does not. However, errors do exist in art, but they are only noticed by the artist, because the artist who knows exactly what he or she wants to express through art. I think one of my accomplishments is I've been able to use line to depict movement and light. An example of this is my still life acrylic painting of a skull and oranges on a table covered with a blanket. I succeeded in the lights and shades, as they were placed correctly.

There are a few problems that I have faced, however. My one difficulty was learning to use new media. Painting with oils for the first time in my life was the most influential moment. It was so beautiful, yet so intimidating. It was different from any other media that I had used, even acrylic paints. I have also tried charcoal, and for me, it is better than drawing with pencil. With charcoal, you draw more freely and easily. It is an advanced yet great medium to use. Even after any and all failures, I overcame them and became better at new media.

Impressionism is definitely the art movement that influenced me the most. While creating, I always think about light and shadow, because that is my way of describing what I see and what I want to show. Just like Monet, Manet, and the other Impressionist artists, I intend to depict subjects and objects through the use of light and shadow.

I have always have loved sports and muscles. Sports and exercise for me is an escape from stress and unwanted anger. I chose IB art because I new I wanted to learn human anatomy to include sports in my projects. My main purpose in my work is to illustrate and show the power, and energy created from sports and exercise. One of my main concerns is how sports and exercise are used wrong and not practiced with the same intense as before. There no longer is that energy in them that I portray in my art. I discovered my strength working in 3D while molding with clay. I later on used paper mâché and cast plaster. I faced difficulties in drawling and painting. However I was able to overcome this by using different materials to create rich texture and surface qualities. Some of the artists who have inspired and influence me the most are Dan Reeder, who make amazing 3D monsters normally dragons and Burn Hogarth who has amazing books on the anatomy of the human body and hands. Some medias I have practiced are: graphite, pen, watercolor, collagraph, lino prints, acrylics, oil paint, transparent, photography, cast and transfers. Out of all of these the ones I have been able to master the most are; paper mâché, clay, cast, and transfers are my favorite due to me being able to touch and mold my art with my own two hands.  Overall I enjoyed the IB art course as it made me open my eyes and see society from a deeper perspective, and has helped me improve my techniques in different mediums.
