The Artist Statement

Esteban Garita

 

            I decided to join the IB-Visual Arts course in order to exploit my artistic abilities. My eagerness towards art began when I was about 10 years old, when I saw my grandmother paint huge paintings, usually oils on canvas. So since then I have always enjoyed art, not only plastic arts, but also music, writing, and all kinds of art.

             My projects started off as really conservative and shy. I was scared to create something on a blank space that looked so clean; I was scared to ruin it. After several tries and some failures, I started to loosen myself and enjoy more and more the drawing and painting techniques. I started with watercolors, which seemed a great media since they could get mixed up and create multiple transparent layers of different colors without me worrying. As I kept investigating I started using a diversity of medias, such as charcoal, oils, acrylics, graphite, inks, and printmaking. With the proper research and experimentation I became more versatile and risk taker when creating a new piece.

             For my works I found inspiration in the abstract movements. For example, one of the ones that inspired me the most was expressionism, most specifically the German artist Emil Nolde. Through the colors and brushstrokes I intended on transmitting a critic towards a phenomenon of society I believe is incorrect. For example, my works “Masquerade” and “POV” expose how people tend to use masks or multiple faces to conceal who they really are in order to fit the strict norms established by society. Furthermore, I also focused on criticizing aspects such as racism, sexism, religious oppression, or even superficiality.

The Artist Statement

            IB Art is a class where you can really express yourself, and between all the stress you have of tests, it provides a great balance to your lifestyle. Starting this course I wanted to look for alternate ways that I could draw that were not sketching, which is my greatest love. My strongest suit has always been drawing with pencil, because I find it easier to create shadows and volumes, but throughout the course this mentality has started to change making me practice with acrylics and oil paintings. The greatest problem I have faced is my fear to “splash” or “ruin” a canvas or paper, because I am always afraid of actually ruining the artwork. The development of ideas is also an obstacle, because sometimes I find inspiration very easily, and other times it is extremely hard to find. The only way that I get over this fear of ruining the artwork, is to have self confidence in myself as artist. When developing ideas, I always found a connection that could be made with graffiti, being an expressive style of art. I found my love for graffiti and the elements that form the style; especially street graffiti has a more warm sense of belonging. I started to focus my ideas in Mexican graffiti, connecting the day of the dead culture, which symbolizes a part of my life. You can see in several of my paintings that there are some elements of graffiti, and also an allusion to the Mexican culture. To get to the point that I am in I have had to go through much media experimentation, which only helped to open my mind as an artist.

The Artist Statement

LUISA FLÓREZ-ESTRADA

 

The reason why I decided to take art class is because I’ve always had my right side of the brain, the creative and artistic one, more dominant then the left, the analytical and logical. However, I somehow managed to involve both rationality and creativity in my artworks. I figured that the best way to begin was to do a project about myself and the things I enjoy. I experimented with different techniques and themes such as contour drawing, watercolors, oil paint and collagraphy among many others. I also research many artists like Osnat Tzadok, Richard Shipps and graffiti artists like Shepard Fairey or Banksy. In some I failed, but learned. In others I was triumphant. This is how I realized what my strength is: design. After a huge creativity drought I found doodling, which helped me acknowledge my style as an artist: working with patterns. I researched graphic designers, Mike Perry being one of my favorites. Finally I switched to photography. After all this process I finally realized that the main theme of my art is nature. It is either the main focus or “hidden” within the artwork, but it is always present somehow.

 

I began art class confident of who I was, what I liked and who I wanted to be. I ended it clueless. Clueless with who I was and what I liked because I was able to have a deeper look into myself and to expand my thoughts. However, I still remain uncertain about who I want to be. I have discovered unknown abilities and learned to accept the fact that I don’t have to be always successful, that things won’t be perfect the first time, and that it is okay to fail even if it happens more than once.
